Who we are
Red Tractor are the champions of British food, farming and consumer safety. We are the UK’s largest food standards scheme. Our products contribute over £14 billion to the UK economy. Red Tractor membership puts British food and drink on the shelves of some of the UK’s largest retailers.
We provide links between farming, processing, packing and distribution, with 46,000 British farmers and major supermarkets working to our world leading standards. Our food is traceable, safe and farmed with care because our inspectors check every step of the food journey from farm to pack. That’s 60,000 checks, each year, all in one place. Which makes life simpler for everyone.
2020 is our 20th anniversary and for the last two decades, we have worked tirelessly to drive up standards in food safety, animal welfare and environmental protection.
Our Standards
We have some of the most comprehensive farm and food standards in the world, covering more types of food and drink than any other assurance scheme.
This means that everything carrying the Red Tractor logo can be traced from pack back to British farms. Our food is safely produced for you and your family to eat. It’s been responsibly sourced and it comes from crops and animals that have been well cared for.
Our approach to our standards is based on four key principles:
Animal Welfare
When you see the Red Tractor logo you can be confident your food and drink has been produced to rigorous standards and with great care and attention. That’s because we have partnered with animal welfare experts and vets since 2000 to continuously strengthen our requirements on animal welfare. Together we work to ensure that our animals are healthy with the right living space, food and water. Our members include award-winning farmers who share our priorities to strive for the very best in animal health and well-being.
Environmental Protection
A Red Tractor farmer’s land is their office and very often their home. They care about looking after the British countryside they love as much as we do. Fertilisers and pesticides are only used when absolutely necessary to keep crops healthy using methods that reduce the risks to wildlife and the environment wherever possible.
Food Safety
We insist on rigorous production standards from farm to pack. We don’t allow growth hormones. We don’t allow irresponsible use of animal medicines and antibiotics. Chlorine washed meat and poultry do not meet our Certified Standards. Only good quality, British food at its seasonal best carries our logo.
Traceability
The Union Jack on our logo confirms your food has been produced entirely in the UK, with every step of the food journey checked and documented from farm to pack. All food and drink can be traced right back through the supply chain to British farms.
Promoting the Red Tractor logo
The latest research into food label recognition has shown that more than two-thirds of shoppers are aware of the Red Tractor logo, with a staggering 55% saying that it infl uences their food purchasing decisions. This cements the logo’s position as one of the most recognised food assurance brands in the UK, and your Red Tractor team has had a busy and successful year spreading the message about quality British food and drink. 

There has been on-pack promotion in most UK supermarkets for a quarter of 2015 and more than 13million promotional stickers have appeared on everything from assured fresh meat and poultry to vegetables and fruit. And, in excess of 140,000 Red Tractor fans have entered our competitions, encouraging them to find out what the logo stands for. In total, our PR campaign has reached an audience of over 48million through press, TV and radio activity.

Ten new videos have also been created to allow the public to meet the farmers who are behind Red Tractor food. Each one features a different sector of production and have been published on the Red Tractor Facebook page, YouTube channel and website. They showcase the great work that farmers do, and explain to consumers why Red Tractor standards are important in the production of food and drink they buy.
