Nuclear engineering
Nuclear Engineering
Always a subject which will draw strong and often controversial arguments for and against regarding cost and safety what is, without doubt true, is the scale of the industry globally. It is estimated that over 12% of global electricity needs are satisfied by nuclear power. As an industry and employer it is therefore massive, supporting many businesses across the globe in more than 30 countries. There are already over 400 reactors & that excludes those used in smaller scale power generation such as submarines and other naval vessels.
Kompass includes almost 180 nuclear engineering related categories. Despite the nuclear disaster in Japan many countries around the world are again beginning to step up their nuclear power station building programmes. The US has announced the first two new plants in 30 years and the UK has recently signed an agreement with France to develop a greater commitment to nuclear plants as a part of a diversified energy mix. Over 1500 new jobs are expected to be created in the UK and across Europe the expenditure is forecast to exceed £5bn – a massive boost to many companies, either directly, as in the case of Rolls Royce and Areva or in the vast supply chain of smaller businesses.
Kompass contains precise classifications covering many of the unusual and specialist pieces of equipment used in building and maintaining nuclear installations for example: details of 958 companies around the world producing or supplying the specialist steels required; 361 manufacturers or providers of Boilers and heat exchangers and 568 organisations who have the Engineering Contractor skills for this highly specialised work. Kompass contains more than 57,000 product and service classifications and within these will be many of the other essential items used in Nuclear engineering, these include; control panels, pressure vessels, effluent treatment and cooling systems.
