Hone-All’s Andrea Rodney: Create your own learning and development programme

22 March 2016

Hone-All Director Andrea Rodney’s rise up the corporate ladder didn’t begin with a specific career goal or an extensive leadership training programme. It really started from her desire to fully understand the technical elements of the manufacturing business where she joined simply to help out. She drew up her own process diagrams and cheat sheets and decorated her admin office with product schematics and diagrams. Soon, Andrea could answer any question put to her by a customer. However, this was only one of the benefits. For as the company expanded and acquired a larger factory and expanded service range, Andrea began taking over more duties, from quoting, implementing approved Quality systems and procedures through to production management and marketing. Bringing her background in sales and customer service to her expanding responsibilities, Andrea was able to bring ‘softer’ skills to the company. https://www.eef.org.uk/about-eef/media-news-and-insights/blogs/2016/mar/honealls-andrea-rodney

In addition to increasing manufacturing capacity Hone-All is also enhancing the interface between itself and existing and potential customers with the introduction of an App to complement its redesigned website. “The new App has been developed to provide customers with information on our services and capabilities. By simply rolling over the individual machining icons users of the App will be presented with machining tolerances, and other relevant information that will enable them to better understand what we can deliver for them. It will also include direct contact via e-mail or phone for those more detailed questions,” says Andrea Rodney. http://www.hone-all.co.uk/Downloads/Press-Releases/14-06-Hone-All-Investment2014.pdf

Hot on the heels of the arrival of a new 3m bed length CNC lathe, Hone-All Precision have announced further investment in manufacturing capacity, having finalised specifications for their new deep hole boring machine, prior to delivery in Sept 2014. This will be their second machine with a 3m length capacity and expands their existing boring capacity, helping to reduce lead times and meet growing customer demand. The ability to bore components of this length and up to 200mm diameter is of significant interest to customers in the burgeoning oil & gas sector where Hone-All is a major supplier of machined components. “We are seeing a trend for longer, larger components and with the recent installation of our Tuscan 4m and the Harrison 3m bed length lathes we have the turning capacity to meet these new demands, so the next logical step was to bring in this increased boring capacity,” says Hone-All Precision Director, Andrea Rodney. The installation of the new borer will require some realignment of the existing facilities to maximise workflow potential. The smaller capacity borer will be relocated to their deep hole drilling section, where the company will make better use of existing BTA gundrill tooling. Transfer of knowledge will be facilitated between those involved in deep hole boring and gundrilling to ensure skilled staff are always available to maintain production across the manufacturing processes.   Aerospace is also a growing market and a major increase in production for a military helicopter component has seen Hone-All invest in the refurbishment of their Jones & Shipman CNC honing machine. Installing a  new CNC control by OSAI and a complete rebuild of the hydraulic pack & controls by Kanflu. As a result, Hone-All now has greater control over component accuracy and have benefited from increased production. This will help to offset the doubling of demand for these components over the past six months, with the prediction of significant growth over the next 3 yrs.
